"Nothing was ever accomplished without faith and enthusiasm."

Founded in 1986, The Maud Powell Society for Music and Education (formerly The Maud Powell Foundation) is dedicated to preserving the legacy of American violinist Maud Powell and furthering her musical ideals by encouraging young people to cultivate music. The Society is a resource on America's classical music history and the significant contributions women have made to music throughout the ages.

Maud Powell (1867-1920) was America's first great master of the violin to achieve international rank. Her appearance on American concert platforms from 1885 to 1920 exerted a pivotal influence on the tradition of violin playing and on the development of audiences and institutions for classical music in North America.

To fulfill its purpose, the Maud Powell Society offers a variety of programs, publications and events in addition to its work on ongoing projects. Supported entirely by its Friends around the world, the Society welcomes your participation and interest.

While working to preserve Maud Powell's legacy, we actively encourage young people to see her as a worthy role model. Through the story of Maud Powell young people can grasp the importance of music and the arts as part of a purposeful life. They can see how the arts contribute to the vitality of the communities in which we live. Through Maud Powell, young people can begin to understand how to develop character and that anything is possible if you work hard and believe in yourself and your dreams. They can see that one person can make a difference, affecting the lives of thousands of people in a positive way.

We invite you to explore our web site. Introduce yourself to Maud Powell (or become better acquainted) and learn more about the Maud Powell Society's current projects, educational programs, publications (including our magazine about women in music), resources and achievements in About Us . If you are a musician , please be sure to check out our invitation to you to commemorate Maud Powell with concert tributes in Upcoming Events.

Maud shares her own struggles learning the violin and getting her career going and offers good, solid advice to aspiring musicians in the For Young People page, including her ten practice rules. Educators and parents involved with primary and intermediate school students will find resources of value among the pages on this web site. Likewise, secondary school and college-level teachers will find resources here in teaching music history or women's studies or America's cultural history.

The Maud Powell Society is governed by an enthusiastic Board of Directors which receives guidance from time to time from its distinguished Advisory Board members. It receives its support primarily from individual donors as Trustees and Friends.

The internationally recognized Maud Powell Society is a non-profit, tax-exempt corporation pursuant to Section 501(c)(3) of the U.S. Internal Revenue Code, operated exclusively for educational, charitable and literary purposes.
